The lymphatic system is responsible for helping fluid and waste leave the body and for regulating the immune system. When the lymphatic system becomes blocked, fluid builds up and stagnates, causing the entire system to become toxic, making us feel sluggish and more susceptible to viral or contagious diseases.

A lymphatic drainage helps clear blockages, eliminate excess fluid, metabolic wastes and toxins from the body, transport nutrients to cells and increase metabolic efficiency. It enhances the overall performance of the lymphatic and immune system for optimum function and it also has a calming effect on the nervous system helping relieve stress and tension.

Lymphatic drainage is essentially a form of massage. The first session involves a consultation to determine the client's needs and, at that point, the number and frequency of future sessions is decided upon. Unlike some other forms of massage, lymphatic drainage utilises a very light pressure combined with soft pumping movements in the direction of the lymph nodes. The process can take anywhere from 30 minutes, concentrating on a localised area, to two hours when working on the whole body.

The benefits of lymphatic drainage are considerable and are particularly relevant in today's environment where pollution, stress and deficient immune systems make people more susceptible to contagious diseases and viral infections. It is used to treat a wide range of medical and non-medical conditions such as:

  • Oedema and fluid retention (pregnancy, pre menstrual, allergy, puffy eyes, swollen ankles, legs, hands, and abdominal bloating)
  • Pre and post operative cases (cancer, cosmetic surgery or where lymph nodes have been removed or the lymphatic system impaired in some way)
  • Lymph oedema (primary and secondary)
  • Glandular Fever and Chronic Fatigue Syndrome
  • Constipation and other digestive disorders
  • Hormonal imbalances (PMS, teenagers, pre and post pregnancy, menopause)
  • Acute injuries and accident trauma oedema, including sport and burns
  • Migraine, sinus, hayfever
  • Acne and other skin conditions
  • Arthritis and rheumatism
  • Cholesterol
  • Scar tissue (old and new)
  • Stress, anxiety, tension
  • Recurring infections (colds, flu, ear, chest, cystitis)

This massage can also be incorporated into your regular beauty regime as it reduces puffy eyes and dark circles in addition to enhancing the texture and appearance of the skin, rejuvenates collagen fibres and slows the ageing process.

It is important to note that lymphatic drainage should not be used by people with acute inflammation, malignant tumours, thrombosis or major heart problems. Due to its effect on the immune system, people with cancer, diabetes, thyroid or kidney problems, asthma or epilepsy should seek medical advice before making an appointment. It is also advisable that women do not undergo lymphatic drainage while menstruating.
